Thalia House completed the establishment of its Board of Directors in February 2000. The six members and their backgrounds are provided below.

Elizabeth A. Pomfret, MD, PhD, President
Dr. Pomfret is Director of Live Donor Liver Transplant and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center, in Burlington, MA. Dr. Pomfret graduated Cum Laude from the combined MD/PhD program at Boston University School of Medicine in 1990. After medical school she completed 6 years of surgical training at the New England Deaconess Medical Center, a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School in Boston. She then completed 2 years of fellowship training in Multi-Organ Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), under the direction of Dr. Roger Jenkins. Dr. Pomfret sought additional surgical training in Hamburg, Germany under the tutelage of Dr. Christoph Broelsch; the pioneer surgeon who performed the first successful Live Donor Liver Transplant in 1989. She has published extensively in the areas of liver metabolism, nutrition and transplantation.

James J. Pomposelli, MD, PhD, Vice President and Treasurer
Dr. Pomposelli is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center. He and Dr. Pomfret met during high school in 1977 and married in 1989 during their last year of medical school. Dr. Pomposelli graduated from the combined MD/PhD program at Boston University. After medical school, he obtained surgical training in the Harvard/Deaconess Surgical Program at the New England Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Following residency, he served as the first Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Nutrition Support Service at the Columbia HCA/Metrowest Medical Center. He then accepted a Multi-Organ Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery fellowship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Roger Jenkins. Dr Pomposelli also traveled to Germany to train with Dr Broelsch in the area of Liver Donor and Split Liver Transplantation. After fellowship training he accepted a senior surgical position at the Lahey Clinic in July 1999 to complete the Live Donor Liver Transplant team. Dr Pomposelli is the author of nearly 40 original publications and chapters in the areas of nutrition, metabolism, critical care and liver transplantation.

Ann McMackin MS, Secretary/Clerk and Director
Ms. McMackin is Chairman of the Operations Committee as well as Secretary of Thalia House. Ms McMackin was the project coordinator responsible for moving the Liver Transplant team from the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston to the Lahey Clinic in June 1999. Prior to forming her own consulting business in 1996, Ms McMackin was a hospital administrator and has over 20 years of experience in the Healthcare Industry. She is a member of the National Association of Hospital Administrators and the Association of Cardiovascular Administrators. While at the Lahey Clinic, she was a board of director of the Alpha Credit Union.

Thomas Pomposelli, MBA, CPA, Director
Thomas Pomposelli, is President-Owner, of Medicor Associates in New York. He started this company in 1996 and provides services in electronic claims submissions and collection to medical practices, in addition to practice management consulting. Prior to founding Medicor, Mr.Pomposelli was the Corporate Controller at Scriptex Inc. In this capacity as the CFO of an office products company, he managed all financial support functions including accounting, billing receivables and human resources. Other duties included cash flow management, banking and manufacturers relationships. Mr.Pomposelli has spent over 20 years in financial and accounting positions. He received an MBA from Farleigh Dickinson University and a B.S. from Rider University.

R. Duane Clark, Director
R. Duane Clark is Senior Director, Marketing at Fujisawa Healthcare, Inc., Deerfield, Illinois. He is responsible for both professional and consumer marketing efforts on behalf of a $500 million pharmaceutical product line. These responsibilities include directing market analysis, forecasting, product pipeline assessment, strategic pricing, outcomes and pharmacoeconomic research for all FHI products in the U.S. Mr. Clark joined Fujisawa in 1993 and was responsible for the successful worldwide launch of Prograf in 1994. Since joining the company he has held a number of positions of increasing responsibility, including Senior Product Manager (1995) and Director, Marketing – Immunology (1997). He currently is directing the U.S. launch of Fujisawa’s first dermatologic product—a totally new class of therapy for Atopic Dermatitis. Duane has spent his entire 15-year career in the healthcare field, beginning with office and hospital-sales positions at Marion Laboratories (1986-1990), followed by immunology sales and sales management at Ortho Biotech, Inc. (1989-1993), prior to joining Fujisawa. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Kentucky.

N. Stephen Ober, MD, MBA, Director
Dr. Ober is President and Chief Executive Officer of Synergy Health Care, Inc., the informatics subsidiary of Quintiles Transnational, the world’s largest clinical research organization. He was formally corporate medical director and executive vice president of Private Health Care Systems, one of the largest health plans in the United States. After receiving his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1991, he founded Synergy Health Care and quickly developed one of the largest health care research databases in the country. Dr. Ober is a graduate of Boston University, Boston University School of Medicine and received training in orthopedic surgery from University of California San Diego.

Paul D. Pomfret, Financial Advisor
Paul Pomfret serves as financial advisor to Thalia House and assists in guiding its directors in maximizing the returns on the organization's investments. After receiving a B.S. and M.B.A. in business finance from Pennsylvania State University, Mr. Pomfret began a 12-year Wall Street career working for a number of premier investment banks, including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and Bear Stearns. Throughout his career, Mr. Pomfret had the privilege of dealing with some of the best and the brightest investment managers enabling him to develop valuable relationships, contacts, and alliances throughout Wall Streetand the entire financial industry.
