Live Donor Liver Transplantation is made possible by the amazing regenerative capability of the human liver. Even with the removal of as much as 65% of a liver, both sections of that organ will regenerate back to full size within several months. Because of this regenerative capability, both LDLT donor and recipient can eventually lead normal lives after the procedure.

Living-donor liver transplant procedures may never replace the need for traditional transplants. However, as long as there are an insufficient number of “cadaver” organs available from organ donors killed in accidents or by way of other forms of trauma, LDLT will continue to be advanced as a life saving alternative procedure.

In fact, with increasing demand for healthy livers, and stagnant supply, many experts believe that LDLT has the potential of one day becoming the treatment of choice for patients suffering from terminal liver failure.
